GT5 Prologue - some improvements, some issues remain, great for fans, April 22, 2008
By Dying Fetus Mike

Note, my opinion is based on the PS3 version while driving with Professional physics, ASM/TCS off, using a Sparco cockpit and Logitech G25 wheel.

PRICE - nearly a no-brainer buy for fans; but a little high considering it's a prologue, limited number of events and cars.

GRAPHICS - improved as expected given the possibilities of the PS3. In a way the sensation of speed has decreased, an ironic side effect of the smooth picture quality. It's easier to look further into the distance.

SOUND - really stunning, accurate, raspy, and powerful. Enormous help to the gameplay to hear unique exhaust notes for each car. Huge improvement from GT4.

CARS - there are plenty of great cars for everyone - rather than recreating hundreds of nearly identical and/or boring, useless-for-racing cars, this game sticks to the cars that are meant to go fast, and does them well. The sound and handling of each is unique and seems to be accurate. And the Ferrari F2007, once you beat the S races and earn the required 2 million credits, is just so cool to drive (even though its quick tune options are limited - you can't modify the power, weight, ride height, springs, or driving physics).

TRACKS - the Daytona trioval is a lot more interesting to drive than a super speedway like Motegi. Daytona also comes with a road course, and even though I feel driving a road course in the infield of an oval feels a bit unnatural, it's still a fun course. There's also Fuji, Suzuka, London, and High Speed Ring. Not bad.

AI - improved number and varied driving personalities, but they still defy the rules of clean racing and the laws of physics with impunity. They drive right through you as you serve your penalties (which they often cause). You'll see shortcutting, using runoff areas for acceleration, wallriding, refusing to back off even when their line is hopeless, and of course bumping and shoving you, leaving you to collect from the new array of infractions. It's getting a bit harsh, but the restart button is only a menu away.

HANDLING - if you select "standard" the cars handle pretty much like they did in GT4; if you put it on "professional" then it takes on a more realistic (i.e. unforgiving) character. Default settings are a little mushy even with cars you'd expect to be nimble, and the professional physics render the supercars (Corvette, Ford GT, Ferrari) nearly uncontrollable. After unlocking the S group and quick tune, some cars can have their downforce cranked up to get some handling back, but cars that are more about beauty than function don't have this available. Many of them remain just a tiny mistake away from an unrecoverable slide. No wonder so many inexperienced drivers crack them up (especially if they turn off the driver aids). I completed all the races (except three of the S races) on "professional" but since the AI is not subject to the same realities, you may occasionally need to set it back to "standard" in order to be competitive.

So far the game has overall been enjoyable, and much of the struggle can be overcome by selecting the correct car for each race, just as it was in GT4.

Good kit EXCEPT for Media Hub if you have newer slim PS3,December 7, 2009
By Ruben A. Saldivar "Ruben" (WA)

Great kit that saves you money over buying each item separately. However, WARNING the media hub will NOT work with the new slim PS3s. This was disappointing. I was looking forward to having more USBs available. It will only work on the older PS3s. I'm not going to say it's misleading, but it would've been nice to know that it doesn't work with the newer slim models. Other than that the remote, charger, and HDMI cables all work perfectly so far.

Great device with limitless potential,
By Steven C. Branson "SARU" (Los Angeles, CA)

Quick Review: Snaps on quick, sets up quick, works great. Typing takes a bit of practice, like any new keyboard.

Highlight: A rarely mentioned feature is "Touch Mode" which lets you run your finger over the keypad like a trackpad. Nice, but not super useful on the PS3 (since you have two handy pointing devices on the controller).

Bonus Highlight: This device is compatible with Mac OS X in Bluetooth and USB - this means you can connect it to your Mac and use it as a wireless keyboard and trackpad. It even features right and left-mouse click functionality. Even if you don't have a PS3, it makes a good mouse/keyboard/remote if you happen to use a Mac as a media server in your living room (Mac Mini in my setup) and want a keyboard/trackpad that fits in the palm of your hand. I even typed this review out with it!!

Just plug it in with a USB cable and the OS will detect it - for bluetooth follow included directions.

Definitely recommend this device for both its intended and unintended purposes.

Great!, February 7, 2010
By C. TYLER "CrAcKSTim" (Cali)

This dualshock controller works great! It has the same functionality of the standard sony controllers for the ps3. The silver isn't as good because it can get dirty easier. Take care of your equipment and it'll last a long time.

Get ready to rumble, even with PS 2 games!,

By Sebastian Fernandez (Tampa, Florida United States)

But I was wrong. If you bought your PS3 prima rily to watch blu ray films, as I did, then this is a must have, transfering all the functions from the PS3 controllers into an easily recognizable and familiar format.

Should've been rumble from the start.,
By The Gifted One

The Playstation 2's highly regarded DualShock 2 controller was considered by many to be the best videogame controller of all time. So when you've got a winning design there's no need to change anything. However, because of a legal battle with Immersion over rumble technology, Sony was forced to offer their Sixaxis controller without rumble. The Sixaxis had the same Dualshock design but it felt too lightweight and cheap. Thankfully the lawsuit has been settled and rumble has come back to the Playstation.

For the most part, the DualShock 3 is almost identical to its PS2 precessor. But it has all the features of the original Sixaxis controller in addition to rumble. The controller is still wireless, can be charged by plugging it into your PS3 (or PC), rumble is compatible with all PS1 and PS2 games, and the PS3 supports up to 7 controllers at the same time via bluetooth. Rumble in the DualShock 3 seems more responsive in regards to the location of its vibration depending on which side you get hit on during the games. I don't know if this is something in the design or if it's the developers doing it for the games but I welcome it.

All in all this is currently the best designed controller on the market right now. The PS2's DS2 was incredible so "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" applies here. I'll be enjoying rumble in my PS3 games from now on.

Great value, great upgrade, November 3, 2009
By Nerd Herd

Hi there,

Let me give you some background:

I purchased a PS3 60 GB model at launch back in November 2006. I have loved everything about it ever since. I even upgraded the hard drive to a 250 GB hard drive about a year and a half ago.

Why did I choose to purchase this new, slim, 250 GB model?

Honestly, it's a great deal for what you get. It's cooler (temperature wise), more energy efficient, and it takes up MUCH less space than my previous model. (Not to mention the much nicer, matte black finish as opposed to the older piano black finish which is a scratch/fingerprint magnet.)

Thinking about the new 120 GB vs. this 250 GB model? Maybe this will help:

Originally, I had planned to buy the 120 GB model and upgrade to a 250 GB or 320 GB hard drive myself. However, at the $349.99 price point, there's no need to perform the upgrade myself. For a quality Western Digital or Seagate 250 GB hard drive, you'll be spending anywhere from $50 to $70 plus shipping and/or tax, and for a 320 GB hard drive you'll be spending upwards of $75. Honestly, there really isn't any reason for that with this model. Why go through the hassle when Sony offers a great package at the perfect price point?

I for one am happy with my purchase which I received today from Amazon and am happily inagurating it with the GI Joe: Rise of Cobra blu-ray. For almost anyone that I can think of, the 250 GB hard drive will be more than enough space. However, should the need arise in a year or two (or three), a 500 GB hard drive will be dirt cheap and easy enough to install.

Best System on the Market, August 26, 2009
By Colin Todd Smith

I already owned a original 60GB model that had PS2 backward compatibility. I was planning on getting another BD player for my bedroom. I was considering the new Samsung players when this was announced. It's cheaper and it plays games plus it has a HDD. It was a no-brainer for me. The PlayStation 3 is far and away the best console or for that matter Blu-Ray player you can currently get for its price range. There are many advantages to the 360 and the Samsung BD players, however if I had to have one without the others, my honest and objective recommendation is the new PS3.

Like I've said it's a great bargain for a great system, but it is not without its shortcomings.

-No PS2 Backward compatibility. (important to me but not everyone)
-No Netflix (360 has Netflix and so do the Samsung BD players) (also, important to me but not everyone)
-Backup Utility is awkward (nobody uses FAT32 format anymore and it's actually a process to even format a HDD that way) (You can do it with Swissknife though)
-Online play isn't as good as 360's(but it IS free and is being improved even as I type this...)
-No mic jack on controller (Bluetooth Headsets are not as easy, so people don't bother. The result is a lot less people are not talking in multi player games. A plus side to this is that you don't have to listen to a bunch of 13 year olds screaming the N-word and insulting your mom).

I hope I didn't complain too much about the system it really is a great machine and the best deal out there.

Slimmer & Better!,December 11, 2009

The new PS3 slim is quite an improvement over the older one in most ways

First, let me tell you that i have owned both systems the orignal 40gb PS3 and this 120gb PS3 slim.

The new ps3 slim is (obviously) lighter, thinner, and more compact overall. On the outside, the ps3 is now a flat black color, which is great for reducing unsightly finger prints. The buttons are no longer touch style (i was disappointed) and are now replaced with regular clicking buttons.

The power scource is much more energy efficient and once you turn it in it actually feels smoother (and quiter) running then the original ps3. I also noticed my slim is much quiter, my original is at least twice as loud as the slim. Both systems play all PS3 games and bluray movies (bluray movies look amazing off the ps3 if you have the right HD equipment!) Some of the older PS3 systems are backwards compatible, the slim is not. So if your dying to play a collection of ps2 games you have, you might wanna go for an older systme that is backwards compatible. But im sure once you start playing ps3 games, you'll totally forget about your PS2 collection!

Inside the ps3 slim is also a HUGE fan...(google it there's plenty of pictures# and thats likely what keeps it cool despite its compact figure. Even after playing some long runs on my ps3 slim, there's not more of a heat output then my orignal. PS3's dont really having a heating problem, leave that to the XBOX 360s. I do have one tip though, some ps3 slim users have been experiencing problems and saying their PS3 slims run hot. To prevent this, look at the power cable, on both ends there is white text on the actual cable, make sure on the side going in the ps3 and in the outlet, that the white text is facing upwards. I have NO clue why this is but it does run cooler when its put that way.

Games are quite amazing and ps3 gameplay doesn't change from the orignal to the slim except for the fact that my ps3 slim loads maybe a second or two faster then my original. Online gaming is still the same, lag-free and fast if you have a high speed connection! #TIP: configure your router if you can to let your ps3 have priority on bandwith, it helps especially when downloading 1GB+ demo's)
